Conservatives call for Labour u-turn over care cuts
Labour Lambeth are facing a growing tide of anger over their service cuts and price hikes aimed directly at the elderly and most vulnerable people in Lambeth. Local health providers, including the Primary Care Trust, King's College Hospital, The Maudsley Hospital and St Thomas' have all warned Labour councillors about the implications, but so far they have refused to listen.
Conservative councillors are continuing their campaign against the proposals and hope Labour councillors will finally admit they were wrong and agree to drop the proposals.
Conservative Group Leader Cllr John Whelan says: "The proposed 132 per cent rise in charges for social care for the elderly is targeted at the most vulnerable members of the community. These services include helping the elderly get out of bed, getting food and having a wash. None of these cuts were in Labour's election manifesto.

Cllr Irene Kimm says: "When the Labour administration consulted on their budget they deliberately chose not to tell residents that these cuts would be imposed on the most vulnerable people."
"The alternative Conservative budget had no cuts to the voluntary sector, no increase in charges and no change to the eligibility criteria. Labour refused to adopt our proposals and now they won't publish the alternative options they were given by council officers to avoid these cuts."

LAMBETH LABOUR...
- Want to increase care charges from £7.55 to £17.50 per hour, penalise the most vulnerable in Lambeth.
- Want to change the assessment criteria to only provide services for people in 'Critical' need, which will result in vulnerable people losing services as they won't be able to afford them.
- Don't believe that these changes will result in more hospital admissions, longer hospital stays, bed blocking, carers pushed to the edge and more people going into residential care.
