Conservative councillors win concessions over dustcart depot
Local residents, supported by Conservative councillors, have won important concessions over the future operation of a new depot for Lambeth's dustcart depot that the Labour administration is siting at Vale Street in West Norwood. Lambeth's Planning Applications Committee approved the plan for the dustcart depot although it agreed to a Conservative proposal to bring the "traffic routing plan" back for agreement at another meeting.
Labour Lambeth, backed to the hilt by the local Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, is proposing to effectively waste £12.5 million on what is supposedly a "temporary site" for the dustcart fleet at Vale Street in the heart of a residential area instead of finding a permanent site elsewhere.
Conservative ward Councillors Andrew Gibson and Graham Pycock for Gipsy Hill, where Vale Street is situated, criticised the flawed consultation, which failed to consult many of the residents living on roads that will suffer from extra noise and vibrartions caused by the dustcart fleet. Children attending Elmwood Primary School next to Vale Street are also likely to be at risk but the school was not told about the scheme.
Cllr Gibson says: "The council admits that some 80 per cent of the dustcart fleet will use Rosendale Road which will cause unacceptable disturbance to local residents throughout the day starting from early morning.
"Over 300 residents formally objected to the proposals - a huge number. Only two residents, plus the misguided local MP, supported it."
Thurlow Park ward Councillors Irene Kimm and Clare Whelan also highlighted the adverse environmental impact of the dustcart relocation. Vital papers relating to the background to the decisions were "withheld" from scrutiny. Lambeth officers claimed there could not be retrieved because Lambeth had not paid the storage supplier."
Cllr Whelan says: "Local residents have been dumped on by the planners and the wool has been deliberately drawn over their eyes. There is little transparency in any of these decisions and taxpayers money has been wasted on an inappropriate site."
