| Herne Hill Conservative activist dies at 61 | ![]() |
||||
| Anthony 'Tony' Emmanuel Jones, who has died aged 61, was well known in Herne Hill and the Loughborough Junction area as a newsagent, former school governor, and Conservative Party activist. Born in Nigeria, Tony came to the UK in his early 20s and worked as a compositor on national newspapers. He used the proceeds of his redundancy to buy a newsagent's business in Milkwood Road. Tony, who lived in Coldharbour Lane, first stood for election as a Conservative in 1990 for Herne Hill Ward and again in 1994 and 1998. He made huge sacrifices for his family, working long hours in his shop to support his wife Dr Nkoyo Jones when she was qualifying as a medical practitioner. |

| Tony, a devout Christian, died on 6th June after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, now a local GP, two sons, and a daughter. Conservative Group Leader Councillor John Whelan said in a funeral eulogy at the Chapel of Rest, Lambeth Cemetery: "Tony espoused Conservative values all his life - devotion to his family, loyalty to his community and heritage in both Nigeria and the UK, hard work, and the willingness to help others at times of distress or need. He was always the first to volunteer to help at election times. Together we enjoyed several long battles against Lambeth bureaucrats and whether in victory or defeat Tony never lost his optimism or sense of purpose." Contact us about this issue... |
