Campaign to save Gipsy Road Post Office continues...

... but the axe falls on 7 other branches in Lambeth

The Post Office has agreed to review its decision to close the Gipsy Road branch in West Norwood. More than 3,000 people signed a petition calling for the branch to remain open.

Local Conservative councillors have worked with local shopkeepers to campaign vigorously against the plans to close Post Offices across the borough since they were announced earlier this year.

As well as collecting hundreds of signatures for petitions, they have sent submissions to the consultation, outlining their opposition to these plans.

Cllr Andrew Gibson says: "Closing these Post Offices will cut off access to postal services for local people in one of Lambeth's most deprived areas.

"Gipsy Hill ward has high numbers of residents with long term limiting illness, and the highest proportion of residents in the borough aged over 65, who are more dependent on Post Office services."

The are seven other Post Offices that will now close, despite opposition from local Conservatives. They are:
  • 75 Central Hill, London SE19 1BS
  • 34 Abbeville Road, London SW4 9NG
  • 154 Acre Lane, London SW2 5UT
  • 16 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7UT
  • 34 Vauxhall Street, London SE11 5LG
  • 7 Hermitage Lane, London SW16 3LH
  • 47 Streatham Place, London SW2 4QG
Speaking last month, Gipsy Road's sub postmaster Niranjan Francis said his branch, which made profits of more than £50,000 last year, should not close, insisting it would have a devastating effect on the community.

He said many of his customers are elderly and would find it difficult reaching and parking at the branch closest to Gipsy Road, in Seeley Drive, Sydenham Hill. He also said the branch was a focal point for the community, which would disintegrate in its absence.
