John Bercow MP

John Bercow, the Conservative MP for Buckingham, served on Lambeth Council from 1986-1990 as a councillor for St Leonard's Ward in Streatham. Councillor John Whelan, current Group Leader, comments: "John is still remembered by many town hall staff and members for the quality of his speeches. When ever he stood up people crammed into the chamber to listen."

Sir John Major

Sir John Major, the former Conservative Prime Minister, was chairman of the Housing Committee when the Conservatives won control of Lambeth Council in 1968. Councillor John Whelan says: "John is still remembered foundly even by his political opponents of the time as a reforming housing chairman who took a tough line on racism and did his best to improve the housing stock.

Sir George Young MP

Sir George Young, the Conservatrive MP for North West Hampshire, served on Lambeth Council after the Conservatives took control of Lambeth Council in 1968 together with his wife Aurelia (Lady Young). Councillor John Whelan recalls: "Sir George was pretty surprised to be elected but at a recent social event he atttended at Lambeth Town Hall had fond memories of his years on the Council - an ideal start for his future career."

Richard Bacon MP

Richard Bacon, the Conservative MP for South Norfolk since 2001, was Parliamentary candidate for us in Vauxhall in 1997. Councilor John Whelan recalls: "He fought a very feisty campaign, clearly made his mark, and has gone on to do great things for his constituents."

Andrew Selous MP

Andrew Selous, the Conservative MP for South West Bedfordshire since 2001, was an activist in the Vauxhall Conservative Association, and volunteered to be a by-election candidate for us in Oval Ward. Councillor John Whelan recalls: "I was Andrew's agent for the by-election and he was a model candidate despite the stiff odds against us."
